Colourful graphic liner

One of the best ways to dive into creative makeup is through the use of eyeliner. Slick, simple to apply and a look that only gets better with practice – and if you are to smudge it slightly, blend it out with an eyeshadow of the same colour and we guarantee no one will ever know. Starting with this season’s colours – think corals, pinks, reds and yellows – you can create a statement-making look in half the time your normal routine may take.

Ellie Yates, the makeup artist who created these looks, believes “makeup shouldn’t detract from your natural beauty.” Instead, it should enhance it – exactly what a lick of bold eyeliner is best known for. For the skin, Yates advises that we should be “keeping it fresh and glowy, to allow your skin to still look as if it’s your own.” A thin layer of foundation or a tinted BB cream is all that’s needed, and a touch of complimentary colour on the lips will bring the look to life.

Founder of Good Mela makeup and biochemistry and neuroscience graduate, Ruth Ann Haughton, finds this look a celebration of creativity. “Beauty can sometimes be restrictive in what’s deemed ‘acceptable’ or ‘on trend’ so I’m fully supportive of anything artistic involving the eyes”, she says, adding that “the eyes are the window to the soul – it’s only right that one should be able to express that graphically and with colour.”

What to use to get the look:

We recommend using Kiko Milano’s Super Colour eyeliner in shades Gold, Bronze and Blue Majorelle, available for £6.90 each in their stores. We also suggest NYX Cosmetics’ Vivid Brights eyeliner in shades Blossom, Envy and Sapphire, for £6 each from your local Boots.

Glitter eyes

The holiday season has long tailed off, but its sparkle remains. For this look you’ll be pairing a bright glitter with a heavily pigmented eyeshadow for eyes that shine bright. Yates chose a finely milled, emerald green glitter for this look – something that “allows the features to really pop but doesn’t create an overly made-up illusion”, she states.

It’s the contrast of the eyes to the dewy complexion of the skin, and the subtle shine of a clear gloss on the lips and cheekbones, that really allows this look to glow. It’s a look that commands attention when you walk into a room, and we could all stand to be a little bolder in our beauty.

For Haughton, this is a look she loves. “Glitter goes with any mood or event, you can dress it up or down”, she finds. The makeup developer advises you try one of two ways: “go heavy with chunky pieces of glitter with different shapes for a fun event, or go with ultrafine glitter which allows the light to bounce of its particulates in a million different ways.”

What to use to get the look:

We recommend trying out Stila’s Glitter & Glow Liquid Eyeshadow in shades Tulip Twinkle, Diamond Dust and Molten Midnight, available for £23 each at Feel Unique. We also recommend using e.l.f. Cosmetics’ Pop of Glitter gels in shades Rose Gold and Gilded Bronze, available for £5 each from their online store.

Blended lips

The last of our beautiful looks this season provides an on-trend focus on the lips. This blended design, also known as ombre lips, has been popular for decades but has never been more elegant.

Starting with a darker shade around the edge of the lips, it fades into a lighter tone as you move towards the centre of your mouth. For the outside, use a lip liner or liquid lipstick of your choice to build base coverage, instead selecting a cream lipstick for the lighter details. These will blend effortlessly, and provide you with the gradient we’re looking for as opposed to a diving line between colours.

For this look, Yates wanted to create “a bold lip and softer eyes”, a parallel to the looks we’ve explored so far. In doing so, it brings the attention to your mouth – and, in turn, the things you have to say with it. Paired with a smattering of nude eyeshadow, and some soft highlighting, you’ll have makeup as timeless as your beauty.

What to use to get the look:

To create this blended effect, we recommend using a mixture of Fenty Beauty’s Lip Paint in shade Stunna, available for £20 through Amazon, and Mac’s Satin Lipstick in shade Mac Red, available for £17.50 through their stores.

Two-toned eyes

Loved our glitter eyes look? Here’s the upgrade. Using two types of glitter in complimentary tones – think emerald greens and sapphire blues, warm, rust oranges and sunshine yellows – you can elevate any outfit and any look. The step up from makeup that follows a single colour story, wearing two-toned eyes allows you to experiment with more editorial looks and shows the world you truly do mean business with your beauty.

This is a look of excitement, something Haughton agrees with fully. “There are no boundaries with glitter”, she celebrates: “It’s fun, and even more so if you have different colours on each eye.” When trying two-toned glitter eyes, you can enhance their glow using highlighter under the arch of the eyebrow, across the nose, swept along the cheekbones and dusted on the cupid’s bow. Get playful with this look – we encourage you to try as many colour combinations as it may take for you to get confident in your beauty.

What to use to get the look:

For this look, we recommend trying Glossier’s Lidstar Duo in shades Herb/Fawn and Cub/Slip, available for £25 a set from their online store. In addition, we recommend Revolution Beauty’s Glitter Paste pots in shades Power Hungry and Long To Be Desired, available for £4 each from Superdrug. We also advise you apply the glitter before your base makeup, and use tissue underneath the eye when applying to catch any fall out.

Something to remember

The great thing about beauty is that it can truly be for all. In the words of Haughton, “nobody has a monopoly on beauty, its trends or who’s included in it” – and they shouldn’t.

“That’s the great thing about makeup, you can completely switch it up so that it works for you. There will never be someone who applies makeup like you – be it a graphic liner, a reverse ombre on the lips or 10 different shades of glitter on your eyelids”, she confidently states.

“We need to begin to open up the world of beauty, so that we can embrace all who choose to be a part of it. We all have the right to have our versions of beauty seen and accepted”, she believes, and we here at Embody couldn’t agree with the sentiment more.
